Today, like yesterday, was very busy for FOS! We provided emergency medical services at a major soccer tournament this weekend. We treated more than 60 patients in these two days. We treated a wide variety of injuries and illnesses in these two day. Some pictures from this event:

First On Scene EMS provides Basic Life Support emergency medical care at any type of event, including soccer tournaments. We are set up this weekend at the Cherry Island Soccer Complex, providing care to the athletes, their family and friends that came to watch them play, the referees, and the staff running the tournament.

Heat can hurt, and heat can kill!

Racing this weekend here in Northern California? This weekend is going to get a lot warmer, compared to how the past week has been. We've been blessed by wonderfully cool weather this week, but this is August. By Sunday, some areas may get close to 100 degrees. Even if you are racing in the morning, it will get very warm.

Remember to up your fluids NOW, and keep hydrating while you are racing. Good fluid management is the key. Avoiding problems, such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, through prevention is your best bet to have a fun race!

Below are some symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke:

Heat exhaustion symptoms

Often pale with cool, moist skin
Sweating profusely
Muscle cramps or pains
Feels faint or dizzy
May complain of headache, weakness, thirst, and nausea
Core (rectal) temperature elevated-usually more than 100°F-and the pulse rate increased

Heat stroke symptoms

Unconscious or has a markedly abnormal mental status (dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, or coma)
Flushed, hot, and dry skin (although it may be moist initially from previous sweating or from attempts to cool the person with water)
May have slightly elevated blood pressure at first that falls later
May be hyperventilating
Rectal (core) temperature of 105°F or more

Heat stroke is LIFE THREATENING, and can occur in varying temperatures, but it more common when air temperatures are in the 90's and 100's. Progression from heat exhaustion to heat stroke can happen very rapidly.

We are a top quality professional Event Medical Services company who provides onsite medical services throughout Northern California. First On Scene EMS was established in 2003 with a mission to provide medical services at all types of public events. A need for professional on site medical services was noticed and that need was filled. FOS started with me and a friend volunteering our time for a local Triathlon Series in Sacramento for Total Body Fitness. TBF conducts approximately 25 races a year. We would provide onsite services at the event for all the racers and if someone needed to go the Hospital then a call was placed to 911 and the local EMS provider transported them. Many sporting events do not have medical staff at the event and some locations are very rural. Response times within the city can be lengthy with the shutdown of many Fire Stations and cutting back of manpower. Response times can be ever greater in a rural setting. It is essential that someone with an illness or injury receive care as soon as possible to improve and shorten the recovery of those persons. That is where we come in......

FOS can provide for your event an assortment of resources. We have DOT certified EMTs on staff for all your event needs. We also have available two Ambulance style vehicles that can be used as event support units. These units can remain in place at your event to shelter patients from the elements and provide quality EMS care until a transporting unit arrives. FOS also has two Jeep Grand Cherokee 4 wheel drive vehicles capable of responding off road to almost any location to extract the sick and injured, and return them to the Finish line Medical Station or meet with an incoming transporting EMS unit.

In additional to those vehicles we also have a two person Quad runner. This Quad is able to pack the needed equipment and staff into those harder to reach locations to stabilize and treat a patient. FOS also can provide your event with Bike Medics, a less quick mode of response but very useful in situations such as Marathons, Fairs, and smaller Community Events. We also have available AEDs as part of our standard equipment.

So the next time you plan an event, don’t forget to include our Medical Staff as part of your event. Participants and spectators will feel much safer knowing qualified Emergency Medical Services Staff are on site and ready to respond at a moments notice!!
